The Gensy Electric Lantern Co. railroad lantern was another interesting find during my visits to local antique shops, and painting it gave me an opportunity to experiment with a few new techniques.
Rather than projecting the initial drawing onto the canvas, I tried transfer paper and found the process more accurate, tactile, and satisfying.
I also experimented with glazing medium, which gave me greater flexibility in blending colors and building up the painted surfaces. Apparently, I was enjoying the process a little too much, because I completely forgot to photograph the painting halfway through! That missing progress photo says something about how engaging this particular piece became. Sometimes getting lost in the work is more rewarding than documenting every step, and this lantern reminded me how much there is still to discover about the materials and techniques I use.
