The Justrite Manufacturing Co. lantern immediately caught my attention with its bold yellow finish and adjustable headlamp, a practical feature that allows the light to be directed wherever it’s needed. But capturing that character on canvas took a little rethinking.
The original composition felt too static and didn’t do justice to the lantern’s distinctive design, so I decided to change its position and give the painting a more dynamic perspective.
That simple adjustment made all the difference, emphasizing the shape, functionality, and personality of this hardworking piece of equipment. The vibrant yellow presented another opportunity to explore color and contrast, while the repositioned headlamp gave the painting a stronger sense of movement. Sometimes a painting needs a fresh perspective before it finally feels right, and this one reminded me that changing direction can be just as important as getting started.
