The Yellow Eveready flashlight may be the most personal painting in my lantern and flashlight series. This chunky yellow brick has been part of my life for more than twenty years, quietly sitting in a basement drawer through different homes, relationships, thunderstorms, and the loss of family members.
While searching antique shops and eBay for interesting flashlights to paint, this familiar old companion was waiting to be rediscovered.
Painting it brought its own challenges, particularly building up layers of yellow acrylic to conceal the pencil lines and underpainting beneath. But the process became more than an exercise in color and technique. Finishing this painting gave me a renewed connection to an object that has silently accompanied so many chapters of my life. Now, if only I could find one of those big brick batteries and bring it back to life.
