A sheepish tilt of the head and a pair of big, questioning eyes give this brown bear an expression that’s almost impossible not to love. There’s something wonderfully human about his face, as though he’s just been caught doing something he shouldn’t have and is desperately trying to figure out how much trouble he’s in.
The more I looked at this bear, the more an imaginary story began to unfold about an awkward conversation with a significant other, complete with innocent glances and the unspoken question.
That little narrative became the inspiration behind the painting. What I enjoy most about painting bears is discovering these unexpected personalities, the expressions that make them feel surprisingly familiar. “Where?” captures a moment of uncertainty, mischief, and perhaps a little guilt, all wrapped up in the face of an otherwise imposing animal.
