I’m Not A Dog

A sideways glance and a slightly aggressive expression give this black bear the unmistakable appearance of someone who’s taken personal offense. The more I looked at his face, the more I imagined what he might think if he saw his own portrait. Rather than appreciating the attention, he’d probably be insulted by the whole thing, as though he’d been mistaken for an oversized dog.

That imaginary reaction became the inspiration for “I’m Not A Dog,” a title that captures his attitude perfectly.

This painting also came together during a neighborhood block party, surrounded by the sounds of children playing and enjoyable conversations with neighbors who stopped to see what I was working on. Those casual interactions made the experience especially memorable, adding a little community spirit to a portrait that already had plenty of personality.
