The Star Headlight & Lantern Co. railroad lantern, made for Amtrak, quickly became one of my favorites in the series. Its stunning metallic blue finish immediately caught my attention, while the star detail on the stand and the warmth of its wooden handle give it a character all its own. Capturing that rich blue in acrylic was particularly satisfying, especially as I continue experimenting with techniques that give acrylic paintings the depth and appearance of oils, without the mess or mineral spirits.
This painting also reminded me how much I enjoy the unfinished stages of a piece, when the brushwork is loose and the image is still taking shape.
There’s something compelling about that in-between moment, even if I’m not quite ready to put down the brush and call it finished. The completed lantern remains one of my favorite explorations of color, texture, and thoughtful industrial design.
