There’s something particularly unsettling about the cold, steely gaze of a polar bear, especially when you remember that beneath all that beautiful white fur is one of the Arctic’s most formidable predators. “It’s Cold” explores that contrast between beauty and danger, placing this imposing bear in a scene dominated by cool blues and icy tones.
Painting white fur presented an interesting challenge, requiring subtle variations in color, light, and shadow to create depth and dimension without losing the impression of white.
The surrounding blues helped define the bear’s features while reinforcing the bitter cold of his environment. What drew me to this portrait was the intensity of his expression, a stare that feels almost personal. He’s undeniably magnificent, but there’s little warmth behind those eyes. This is a bear that might be looking at you and contemplating his next meal.
