An intense, unflinching stare and a pair of unusually light brown eyebrows give this black bear an expression of unmistakable anger. Those small eyebrows, tucked downward and inward toward his snout, create an almost exaggerated scowl that makes him seem personally offended by whoever happens to be looking at him.
That intimidating expression was exactly what drew me to this bear and made “Angry Bear” the natural starting point for my bear portrait series.
The collection began as an exploration of the remarkable individuality and personality found in these animals, and this portrait captured that idea perfectly. There’s something fascinating about how such a small facial detail can completely transform an animal’s expression. Fierce, confrontational, and full of attitude, this bear set the tone for a series celebrating the unique character hiding behind every face.
