About Sagan Medvec

Sagan Medvec, Philadelphia based artist focused on series that explore character.

Sagan Medvec is a Philadelphia-based artist whose paintings explore the individuality and character of everyday objects, animals, and people.

Working primarily in acrylic, he is drawn to subjects with a distinctive presence, finding beauty in their design, personality, history, and imperfections.

His interest in art began in childhood through painting, drawing, and sculpture, eventually leading him toward illustration and visual design. He earned a BFA in Graphic and Interactive Design from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2003. Over more than 25 years, he has built a career in design and marketing, including 15 years operating his own creative agency.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Sagan returned to personal artmaking through daily digital drawing challenges. Those explorations renewed his appreciation for the physical experience of pencil, brush, and paint. His return to painting began with a collection of antique lanterns and flashlights, whose thoughtful engineering and weathered surfaces revealed unexpected character. He has since expanded his work into expressive portraits of bears, a subject with a personal connection to his family’s name and history.

Artist Statement

Sagan works in focused series, following subjects that capture his curiosity and exploring what makes each one distinctive. From antique lanterns and flashlights to expressive animal portraits, his interests may change, but his attention to individuality remains constant. Each series develops its own approach to color, composition, and brushwork, shaped by the character of its subjects rather than a predetermined style.

He is particularly drawn to the details that give something a life of its own. A dent in a lantern, chipped paint around a handle, or an unexpected expression can reveal more than a perfectly preserved surface or carefully posed image. These are the qualities that first capture his attention. His goal is not simply to reproduce what he sees, but to interpret it through painting until the finished work becomes something more than its reference—something with a presence and character of its own.

For Sagan, painting is an opportunity to look more closely at the world and share what he discovers. His background in visual design informs how he approaches each composition, while the physical process of painting allows room for experimentation, imperfection, and discovery. He hopes his work encourages others to look again at familiar subjects and find something worth appreciating that they might otherwise have passed by.
